Presented is a very rare and interesting antique piece and a beautiful wax seal! The seal itself is typical of the 18th century, made from engraved intaglio amber glass. It features two classical figures from Greek mythology; Ares and Aphrodite. The engravings are fine and the composition quite remarkable. Look at the detail of Ares flowing cape! Fantastic!
The silver handle is done in a classic Chinese motif, with wonderfully engraved four-toed foo dog or lion legs and floral borders. The Chinese export handle likely dates to the late 1800's through 1920.
There are no maker's marks on the piece. We believe the amber glass intaglio seal was made in the 1700's and mounted to a piece of Chinese silver made in the late 1800's or early 1900's.
The condition of the piece is good. I see a small ding in the silver handle top, and some very trivial irregularities in the glass seal, and the handle is not perfectly straight as it currently stands, but don't you think this is still an amazing antique work of art? Dimensions: 3 inches tall, the basalt is 1 1/2 inches long by 1 1/4 inches by just over 1/8th of an inch thick.
