Presented is a wonderful American sterling silver tray. This tray dates to circa 1882. The tray is oblong in form, with a wide decorated rim. The rim is decorated with fabulous hand chased repousse work, featuring detailed flowers and leaves against a hand stippled background. The tray has a gadrooned edge. The center of the tray has an ornate monogram, which is done in an interwoven, almost symmetrical style that makes it look like an abstract decoration more than letters. Beneath the monogram is the date 1882.
This piece is in great overall condition. The tray has some knife marks in the center area, which have been smoothed somewhat with time and polishing. The repousse design around the rim is as sharp and crisp as can be. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The underside of the tray is stamped sterling and with the mark for J.E. Caldwell, which is probably the retailer, but could be the maker.
The tray measures about 14 by 10 1/2 by 1 1/4 inches, LxWxH.
The tray weighs 801 grams or 28.2 regular ounces.
