Presented is an antique English sterling silver master butter knife or cheese spreader made by John Vaughan and Thomas Cotterell during the 1840s. The piece has a classical Threaded Fiddle pattern handle and has never been monogrammed. The base also has a threaded border along one side.

The hallmarks on the back are very worn. You can make out the leopard’s head for London and the maker’s mark for John Vaughan & Thomas Cotterell, who worked during the 1840s. The other hallmarks are too worn to discern.

This piece is in fabulous overall condition. There is a tiny split to the blade at the first notch, but the blade is still solid and the split is only really noticeable upon close inspection. There are no other splits, no dents, no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals and no repairs.

The spreader measures 7 5/8 inches long and weighs 49 grams or 1.7 ounces.
