Presented is an impressive Irish Georgian sterling silver trophy cup made by Richard Sawyer of Dublin. Remarkable in its elegant form and superior craftsmanship, this striking trophy cup is magnificently hand wrought. It is raised up on a pedestal base and has a rounded bowl with angular handles on either side. The cup is beautifully engraved with a continuous, wide band of grape clusters and leaves encircling the top of the piece. The lower part of the body is engraved with vertical ribs. The footed base has two different bands of engraving to further define the shape. Everything is completely hand done. This is a very nice form and quite hard to find.

The trophy cup is fully hallmarked just below the rim with the maker’s mark of RS for Richard Sawyer, the duty mark of King George III’s head, the seated Hibernia mark, the crowned harp for the city of Dublin, and the date letter ‘T’ for 1815.

The piece is in good condition overall, especially considering its age. There are several small dents to the body. Some other dents have undoubtedly been removed over the years. At present there is no monogram or inscription. One side of the cup has had a monogram or presentation removed. There is some thinning of the metal in the area of the removal. It would not be advisable to have this area re-engraved, but the removal was well done, and it is difficult if not impossible to detect visually. Otherwise, I can find no other repairs or alterations. There are no splits and no breaks.

The trophy cup measures 3 7/8 inches in diameter at the rim, 6 5/8 inches wide across the handles, and 7 1/2 inches tall at the top of the handles. This piece has a capacity of about 2 cups (16 fluid ounces/473 milliliters) leaving a generous headroom, or about 2 1/2 cups (20 fluid ounces/592 milliliters) filled fairly close to the rim.

The weight is 493.2 grams or 17.3 ounces.
